MLB 2024: Chicago Cubs' Shota Imanaga dominates Pittsburgh Pirates, no-hitter stays intact

Shota Imanaga showcased his exceptional talent once again on Wednesday, 4 September in his first Major League Baseball season for the Chicago Cubs as he delivered a stellar performance against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In a game that ended in the favour of the Cubs 12-0, Imanaga pitched seven no-hit innings, leaving the Pittsburgh Pirates' hitters bewildered and frustrated.

$53 million contract for the Japanese

Shota signed a four-year contract worth $53 million with the Chicago Cubs earlier this year. He has been a revelation in his first MLB season. His impressive start saw him earn an All-Star bid in July, and his performance on Wednesday further solidified his status as one of the league's rising stars.

Imanaga's dominance throughout the game was pretty much evident. He had faced just 23 batters, allowing only two walks while striking out seven. Having impeccable control, he threw 66 of his 95 pitches for strikes. The Pirates simply had no answer for his pinpoint accuracy and devastating arsenal.

A first since 1972 at Wrigley Field for the Chicago Cubs

Despite his outstanding performance, the Japanese was pulled from the game after seven innings. Cubs manager Craig Counsell decided to bring in relievers Nate Pearson and Porter Hodge. They then went on with their business and completed the no-hitter. While the move ultimately paid off, as the Cubs secured their first combined no-hitter at Wrigley Field since 1972, it raised some eyebrows among fans and analysts.

There were questions asked as to why was Imanaga pulled out, who was pitching at an elite level. He should have gotten the opportunity to finish what he started especially given the historical significance of the moment. But, some defended Counsell's decision, as they have a long season ahead of them and he needs to manage the workload of the pitcher.

Shota Imanaga's performance against the Pittsburgh Pirates was nothing short of exceptional irrespective of the fuss around his removal. He can dominate a Major League lineup, even against a struggling Pirates team, which is a testament to his exceptional talent. Once he matures and gains more experience in the league, he can become one of the best pitchers in baseball for years to come.
