18 dots, 7 runs, 4 wickets: Anrich Nortje breaks his own T20 World Cup record to decimate Sri Lankan batting lineup

T20 World Cup 2024: South Africa pacer Anrich Nortje put pressure in middle overs with one strike in each over as Sri Lanka registered their lowest T20I total of 77.

South Africa pacer Anrich Nortje overcame poor form to register a record-breaking four-wicket haul in T20 World Cup 2024 clash against Sri Lanka. At Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, Nortje registered the best bowling figures by a South Africa in T20 World Cups. 
 

When Nortje bowled out Bangladesh

The previous record was created by Nortje in the 2022 edition of T20 World Cup. Against Bangladesh, he took four wickets for just 10 runs in 3.3 overs. Bangladesh were bowled out for 101 in 16.3 overs in the run chase of 206. Earlier, Rilee Rossouw had scored the first century for South Africa in T20 World Cups. Before Nortje, Wayne Parnell and Jacques Kallis had also registered four-wicket hauls.

Nortje's economical spell 

Aiden Markram introduced Nortje in the eighth over. He conceded just one run and dismissed Kamindu Mendis on the fifth delivery. In the 10th over, he got rid of Kusal Mendis with a 145kmph delivery. In his third over, he bowled one on the pads and Charith Asalanka hit it straight to deep square leg fielder Reeza Hendricks. He was brought back into the attack in the 16th over. Angelo Mathews top-edged it to Ottneil Baartman. He bowled 18 dot balls.

Sri Lanka’s lowest total

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 77 in 19.1 overs. This was their lowest T20I score. Their previous lowest T20I total of 82 came against India in 2016. Their previous lowest total in T20 World Cups was 87 which came against Australia in the 2010 edition.
