Following a disappointing exit in the ODI World Cup, a rejuvenated Indian team led by new captain MS Dhoni took to the field. Dhoni not only demonstrated outstanding leadership but also made history by securing the inaugural T20 World Cup. During the Super 8 League matches, India faced a setback against New Zealand but bounced back to defeat England and South Africa, advancing to the semi-finals. India overcame a formidable Australian team in the semi-finals and triumphed over Pakistan in the final to clinch the World Cup 2007 title.

ICC T20 Cricket World Cup 2009 | Super 8

Hosted in England, the second edition of the World Cup saw the defending champions, India, bow out early after consecutive losses to West Indies, England, and South Africa. India's sole victory in the tournament came against Ireland. In an interesting turn of events, Pakistan, the runner-ups from 2007, went on to claim the championship by defeating Sri Lanka in the final.

The West Indies hosted the third edition of the T20 World Cup. India began the tournament strongly, defeating Afghanistan and South Africa in its opening matches. However, subsequent losses to Australia, West Indies, and Sri Lanka led to India's elimination. England ultimately clinched the World Cup title.

The fourth edition of the T20 World Cup, held in Sri Lanka, was a close call for India. The team won against Afghanistan, England, and South Africa, losing only one match. The seventh edition of the T20 World Cup, originally slated for India, was relocated to the UAE due to COVID-19 concerns. Despite winning their subsequent matches, India was eliminated from the semifinals race.

Echoing the 2016 tournament, India's quest for the title in the 2022 T20 World Cup concluded in the semifinals with a loss to England. India had a strong showing in the Super 12 group stage, winning five out of six matches. Their sole group-stage defeat came against South Africa, and a second loss in the semifinals ousted them from the tournament.
