Ajinkya Rahane breaks silence on Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan's BCCI central contract snub a day after Ranji Trophy title triumph
Ajinkya Rahane gave his opinion on Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan's exclusion from BCCI's central contract. Shreyas scored an incredible 95 to help Mumbai win Ranji Trophy title.
India's star batter Ajinkya Rahane has apparently backed BCCI's initiative to engage Indian players more on domestic cricket so as to maintain the essence of red-ball cricket. Rahane applauded the BCCI's stance of prioritising domestic performances when selecting players for the national team. This serves as a reminder to players that consistent performance in tournaments like the Ranji Trophy is crucial for national selection. Rahane recently led Mumbai to Ranji Trophy 2023-2024 title with a comprehensive win over Vidarbha on March 15.
BCCI's action prompted by player reluctance to participate in domestic cricket
This shift in focus comes after instances where centrally contracted players, like Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, showed reluctance to participate in the Ranji Trophy despite encouragement. Observing this trend, the selectors and team management brought the issue to the BCCI's attention. Consequently, BCCI secretary Jay Shah issued a strong message to players, highlighting the potential repercussions of skipping the Ranji Trophy.
“I want to mention about BCCI for giving importance to domestic cricket, which is a very good thing. Allowing players to go and play domestic cricket is very important,” Rahane told PTI.
Rahane emphasises importance of domestic cricket
Following his success in leading Mumbai to their 42nd Ranji Trophy title, Rahane stressed the significance of providing young players with ample opportunities in domestic cricket. Rahane acknowledges that the financial allure of the IPL has, in recent years, overshadowed the importance of domestic cricket. However, the BCCI's revised approach emphasises that players must demonstrate their skills and commitment through consistent performance in domestic tournaments.
“For us, what is important is that (in the) last couple of years, as a team we are playing good cricket. Our players are actually going into the Indian team and representing the Indian team which is a very good sign for Mumbai cricket again.” – Rahane further said.
“I’m not too bothered about other teams, but from here on, for Mumbai cricket, it is important to keep growing, keep thinking about how can we get better as a team in all the formats. We want to repeat this in coming years so our focus will be on that,” Rahane signed off.
Notably, Shreyas played an instrumental role in Mumbai's Ranji Trophy title triumph with a stunning 95 in Mumbai's innings. BCCI might reconsider their decision to exclude Shreyas from central contract after his batting heroics in Ranji Trophy final.
