Bangladesh veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan announced that the upcoming Test series against South Africa would be his last red-ball assignment for the nation. Shakib is currently in India for the two Test match series where his participation is uncertain in the upcoming second Test match because he is recovering from a finger injury he got while batting, he got hit by a Jasprit Bumrah delivery and needed some treatment after his right-hand finger started bleeding.

The Bangladesh all-rounder said that he wants to play his last Test match at Mirpur and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) are trying to organise everything for him. Shakib has played 70 Test matches for Bangladesh scoring 4600 runs and picking up 242 wickets.

Shakib who has appeared in every edition of the T20 World Cup since 2007 announced his T20I retirement on Thursday, ahead of his team’s second Test against India at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. T20 World Cup 2024 was his last outing for Bangladesh in the shortest format of the game where he ended his campaign as the all-time highest wicket-taker.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the second Test, Shakib outlined his plans for both the Test and ODI formats. The 37-year-old all-rounder has not travelled to Bangladesh since the political upheaval surrounding the Sheikh Hasina regime in August. He confirmed his desire to play his final Test for Bangladesh in Mirpur, but if security concerns arise, the upcoming Test against India in Kanpur could mark his last appearance in whites.

"I have expressed my desire to play my last Test in Mirpur, if that won't happen, second Test against India would be my last. Going back to Bangladesh is not a concern, but leaving Bangladesh once I go there is dangerous,” Shakib told reporters on Thursday.

“I have expressed my desire to play my last Test in Mirpur to BCB. I have told this to BCB, they agreed with me. They are trying to organise everything so that I can go to Bangladesh” added Shakib.

Shakib also said that the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 hosted by Pakistan will be his last ODI assignment for Bangladesh.

Shakib's murder controversy

Shakib was named as an accused in a murder case back home during the political unrest that led to the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was a member of Parliament from her party, the Awami League.

BAN vs SA schedule

South Africa will tour Bangladesh for two Test matches which is scheduled to start from October 21. However, there has been a delay in the finalization of the schedule due to the recent political unrest and anti-government protests in the country.

Shakib Al Hasan's international career

Shakib, who made his international debut in 2006, is the only cricketer to achieve the remarkable double of 14,000 runs and 700 wickets across all formats. He ranks as the third-highest wicket-taker in T20Is with 149 wickets. Additionally, he is one of only two players to have scored over 7,000 runs and taken more than 300 wickets in ODIs.
