Chris Gayle compares Yashasvi Jaiswal to West Indies legend and his ex-teammate, says ‘he reminds me a lot of…’
Chris Gayle showered praise on Yashasvi Jaiswal and said that Jaiswal reminds him a lot of West Indies legend and his former teammate Shivnarine Chanderpaul, noting his aggressive style.
In the ongoing fourth Test of the five-match series between India and England at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association Stadium in Ranchi, Ben Stokes has won the toss and chosen to bat first.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has emerged as a standout player in this series, having scored an impressive 545 runs in just six innings at an average of 109. His remarkable performance includes two double centuries and a half-century against England. The 22-year-old has received praise from former West Indies cricketing legend, Chris Gayle, for his exceptional display.
Jaiswal fired double-ton
Jaiswal achieved the rare feat of scoring double centuries in consecutive Tests, with scores of 209 in the first innings in Vizag and an unbeaten 214 in the second innings in Rajkot.
Jaiswal is just 139 runs away from reaching the milestone of 1000 runs in Test cricket. If he accomplishes this in the current Test match in Ranchi, he will become the fastest Indian batter and the second-fastest globally to achieve this feat.
Chris Gayle praised Yashasvi Jaiswal
Chris Gayle has showered praise on Yashasvi Jaiswal, remarking that he appears to have the experience of a seasoned player despite his young age. Gayle likened him to an aggressive version of his former West Indies teammate Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
Gayle emphasised that Jaiswal's attacking style is his strength and advised him not to alter his natural game. Drawing from his own career, Gayle, one of the finest left-handed batters in cricket history, highlighted the value of aggressive play.
“It’s like the guy (Yashasvi Jaiswal) has been playing for 20 years, unbelievable. I just hope he can keep it up. He reminds me a lot of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, a more attacking version of him. A lot will be expected of him as he goes on but they should just let him continue to flow. He’s an attacking player, you see that in his T20 cricket as well…That’s in his nature as well and they shouldn’t try to curb him or try to change him,” said Chris Gayle.
Jaiswal needs only 139 runs to achieve a massive milestone
Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the brink of reaching the milestone of 1000 Test runs, with just 139 runs needed to achieve this feat. Currently, he has accumulated 861 runs in seven Test matches, boasting an impressive average of 71.75. Among his notable achievements are three centuries and two half-centuries, all three of which are scores exceeding 150, including two double centuries.
In the ongoing series, Jaiswal has already struck 22 sixes, setting a new record for the most sixes by an Indian in a Test series. He requires 230 more runs to surpass Sunil Gavaskar's record of 774 runs in a Test series for India, set against West Indies in 1970/71. Following Gavaskar, Virat Kohli holds the second position with 655 runs against England in 2016/17.
Jaiswal has a chance to surpass the record in the fourth Test against England, with 230 runs needed to break it. With four innings remaining, he has ample opportunities to achieve this milestone, especially considering his exceptional form throughout the series.
