T20 World Cup's format

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 boasts the biggest competition yet, with a record-breaking 20 nations vying for the coveted trophy. To ensure every team gets a chance to shine, the tournament is divided into two distinct stages. The first stage is a round-robin format, where the 20 teams are split into four groups of five. Each team will play all four teams in their group once. This initial stage allows every team to showcase their skills and fight for a spot in the next round. To advance from the group stage, only the top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 8s. The Super 8s stage raises the stakes even higher. The eight qualified teams are then divided into two groups of four. Here, the competition intensifies as each team plays the remaining three teams in their respective group. Similar to the group stage, the top two teams from each Super 8s group will then progress to the much-anticipated semi-finals. Throughout the tournament, points will be awarded to determine the winners. Two points are given for a victory, one point for a no-result (like a match being washed out), and zero points for a loss. In the case of a tied match, a thrilling Super Over will be played to break the deadlock. If even the Super Over ends in a tie, another Super Over will be contested until a clear winner emerges. This ensures a fair and exciting conclusion to each match.

Let's take a look at the 20 teams divided into their respective groups:

Group A: Canada, India, Ireland, Pakistan, USA

Group B: Australia, England, Namibia, Oman, Scotland

Group C: Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, West Indies

Group D: Bangladesh, Nepal, Netherlands, South Africa, Sri Lanka

The Caribbean islands, renowned for their passionate cricket fans, will be the stage for the remaining 39 matches. Here's where you can catch the action:

Rules, Playing Conditions

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is introducing a new twist - the 'stop-clock' rule. This rule aims to keep the game moving at a brisk pace. Here's how it works:

Faster Play: The fielding team will have just 60 seconds to start bowling the next over after the previous one finishes. This will ensure less time wasted between overs and a more exciting viewing experience.

Minimum Overs: Matches need a minimum number of overs bowled from each side to be considered a complete game. This is five overs in the group and Super 8 stages, and increases to 10 overs in the knockout stages (semi-finals and final).

Rain Delays: The first semi-final and final have a backup day built into the schedule in case of rain interruptions. However, the second semi-final doesn't have this luxury due to its proximity to the final. To compensate, the second semi-final will have an extra 60 minutes of allotted playing time compared to the other two knockout matches, maximizing the chance of getting a result despite potential rain delays.
