Delhi Capitals captain Meg Lanning struggles to hold back tears after 2nd consecutive WPL final defeat, says 'It all happened relatively quickly'
WPL 2024 final: Delhi Capitals suffered a monumental collapse after Meg Lanning won the toss and opted to bat first against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals (DC) suffered their second consecutive Women's Premier League (WPL) final defeat. After finishing at the top of the points table once again, DC failed to win the WPL title. Lanning was in tears in DC’s dugout as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) players celebrated their maiden WPL title win.
Lanning congratulated RCB for outplaying them in the final at Arun Jaitely Stadium, Delhi. She said the batting collapse happened as quickly as they went from 64 for no loss to 113 all out.
“Obviously, disappointing not to get it done. Finals are about playing well on the day. Congratulations to RCB - you outplayed us tonight. It all happened relatively quickly as it tends to do. As we've seen in this tournament, crazy things happen. Full credit to RCB, they fought back really nicely and deserved the win,” Lanning said in the post-match presentation.
“We did a lot right. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be. A lot of effort went from a lot of the people. Want to thank the support staff. Cricket is a funny game - you win some, you lose some.”
Lanning fails to convert decent start
Lanning contributed with a run-a-ball 23 in the final. She shared a 64-run partnership with Shafali Verma. In the 11th over, she lost her wicket to off-spinner Shreyanka Patil. She was trapped in front of the wickets and even DRS could not save her.
Lanning’s WPL season
Lanning finished the season as DC's highest run-scorer, just ahead of her opening partner. She scored 331 runs from nine innings at an average of 36.78 and a strike rate of 123.05. She hit four half-centuries, most by any batter in the season. The former Australia captain is also the highest run-scorer in the history of WPL.
DC were at the top of the table with six wins from eight games. Their two defeats came against Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians (MI) in the season opener. After four consecutive wins, they suffered a one-run defeat at the hands of UP Warriorz.
