With the T20 World Cup 2024 kicking off on June 2, Rahul Dravid's tenure as India's head coach reaches its culmination point. While his success with younger teams like the U-19 and India A sides made him a natural successor to Ravi Shastri in 2022, he hasn't yet delivered an ICC trophy for the senior men's team. The upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 presents a final chance for Dravid to break India's ICC title drought and conclude his coaching stint on a winning note.

Brian Lara has a piece of advice for Rahul Dravid for T20 World Cup

Ahead of the tournament, West Indies legend Brian Lara offered Dravid some key advice. Speaking to Star Sports, Lara emphasised the importance of a well-defined strategy, particularly for the knockout stages. He cautioned against relying solely on India's star-studded squad. India's struggles in the knockout rounds of ICC events since 2013 highlight the need for a clear tactical plan, according to Lara.

“Indian team, just looking from the outside, in previous Cups, be it T20 or 50-overs, I just feel they are lacking that final plan in terms of how they are going to go about. It doesn't matter how many superstars you have; it matters how you are going to go about winning this World Cup, what plans you are going to have in place, and how you are going to structure your innings or attack. I hope Rahul Dravid can get his players together and can devise a plan for India to win T20 World Cup,” said Lara.

India seek elusive T20 World Cup glory under Rahul Dravid

This T20 World Cup marks the second under Rahul Dravid's leadership as head coach. In 2022, India, captained by Rohit Sharma, reached the semifinals before bowing out to eventual champions England. Historically, India's T20 World Cup success has been limited. They hold only one title, won under MS Dhoni's captaincy in the inaugural year (2007). Since then, they've reached the semifinals twice and finished runners-up once in the following seven editions.

India's quest for the coveted trophy begins on June 5 against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. The highly anticipated clash against arch-rivals Pakistan follows on June 9 at the same venue. Group A also includes co-hosts USA and Canada. Having last played a T20I in January on home soil, India will try to shake off the rust with a solitary warm-up match against Bangladesh on June 1 in New York. This match serves as a crucial preparation step before their World Cup campaign kicks off.
