Former Bangladesh batter and team's logistical manager in T20 World Cup 2024 suffers brain hemorrhage
Tamim Iqbal's brother Nafees went with the Bangladesh team as logistics manager for T20 World Cup 2024. He complained of headaches after coming back home.
Former Bangladesh batter Nafees Iqbal suffered a brain hemorrhage in Chattogram on July 5. Nafees, who is brother of Bangladesh's legendary batter Tamim Iqbal, was brought do Dhaka in an air ambulance. Nafees is currently in the High Dependency United (HDU).
The 39-year-old recently was with Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side in the T20 World Cup 2024 as team's logistics manager. He flew back to Bangladesh with the team on July 28. As per ESPNCricinfo, he had complained of headaches in the last few days.
While Nafees is out of danger, he will take a few weeks to recover fully.
"Specialists have informed us that Nafees is suffering from something called cerebral venous thrombosis," Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) chief physician Debashis Chowdhury told reporters outside the hospital.
"He has blood clots in that part of his brain. He is now stable. His parameters are good. He will be here for a few more days. They have said that if it doesn't get worse, he will make full recovery. He has to be observed closely on the first day. He might be shifted to a ward soon, but these things take a few weeks."
BCB director Jalal Yunus, chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury visited Nafees in Dhaka hospital. Senior players Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mashrafe Mortaza and others visited Nafees as well.
Nafees’ career
Nafees made his ODI debut in November 2003 against England. He scored 309 runs from 16 games at an average of 19.31 including two half-centuries. In Tests, he scored 518 runs from 12 games at an average of 23.54 including one century and two half-centuries. His last international appearance was against Sri Lanka in 2006.
Bangladesh’s run in T20 World Cup 2024
Bangladesh qualified for the Super 8 stage with three wins from four games in first round. They were ineffective in the Super 8 stage losing all three of their games. In their last appearance in T20 World Cup 2024, they had a chance to knock out Afghanistan and reach the semifinals but they botched up a rain-curtailed run chase.
