Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir is the frontrunner in the race of India's head coach position. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Gambhir have remained tight-lipped on the issue. In a recent event at Medeor Hospital, Abu Dhabi on June 2, Gambhir who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 title, spilled the beans that he would love to take up the role.

Gambhir was asked by one of the students about whether he would like to coach India's men's cricket team and help them win the World Cup to which he replied, “I have not answered this question, although lot of people have asked me. But I have to answer you now. I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honor than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 Crore Indians and those across the globe as well.”

Gambhir believes that it is not just the players who win the World Cup but it is a collective effort of 140 crore Indians.

“It is 140 crore Indians who will help India win the World Cup. If everyone starts praying for us and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. The most important thing is to be fearless.”

Gambhir played a crucial role in India's T20 World Cup 2007 and ODI World Cup 2011 title wins. Recently, he returned to KKR as mentor and helped the Shreyas Iyer-led side win the title after 2014. He feels that a happy dressing room is the key to a team’s success.

“A secure dressing room is a happy dressing room, and happy dressing room ends up in a winning dressing room. The only thing I did in the KKR was following this mantra. With God’s grace it actually worked,” he said.

The 42-year-old also had advice to aspiring cricketers. He emphasised that it is a team sport and individuals don’t win you the game.

"Sportsmanship is very important as it teaches you discipline and being fair to everyone. There is no junior senior or international domestic difference. Cricket is a team sport and you cannot win a game single-handedly. Treat your team as family,” he said.

Currently, the Rohit Sharma-led side is in the Americas for the T20 World Cup 2024. With the completition of India’s campaign in the marquee tournament, Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach will come to an end.
