'I'd do it in a heartbeat...': Ex-England captain expresses interest to become Team India's next head coach

The hunt for India's next head coach is still on. Team India's current head coach Rahul Dravid, who took the reins in 2021, will be stepping down from the top post after the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in June. Dravid's initial contract ended last year following the ODI World Cup 2023, but the BCCI successfully persuaded him to stay on for the T20 World Cup. However, this time he has opted not to extend his tenure and has informed the board of his decision.

The BCCI has wasted no time in initiating the search for his replacement. Applications for the head coach position are already open, with a deadline set for May 27. While a definitive successor remains unclear, former England spinner Graeme Swann has expressed his interest in the role. It will be interesting to see who ultimately takes the helm of the Indian cricket team.

At an event in Delhi, Graeme Swann openly stated that he would not refuse the opportunity to become India's head coach if offered. The cricket legend from England shared his deep admiration for India and mentioned that he would eagerly accept the role of head coach if it were presented to him.

"If India asked me to become their coach, I'd do it in a heartbeat! I love this place," Swann told Sports Tak.

 

While Swann lacks experience as a head coach for a national team, he recently assisted the England Lions' coaching staff in preparation for their tour of India. He also commented on the possibility of Andy Flower coaching India, a position Flower himself has ruled out.

"Andy was an incredible coach for England when I played. He took us to no.1 in the world, and was the best coach I've played under. India would be lucky to have him," Swann said.

 

"India... you've got such a strong squad, such a highly talented players, that whoever gets the job... it will be the biggest coaching job in world cricket these days. Whoever gets it, hope they bringing success because they are really under the microscope," former England skipper concluded.

 

Meanwhile, the first batch of Indian players have already left for US for the T20 World Cup 2024 which is slated to start from June 2. Rohit Sharma-led Team India's quest for T20 World Cup glory begins on June 5 in a match against Ireland. The tournament itself runs from June 1 to 29, co-hosted by the USA and West Indies.
