Ian Bishop hits out at Ben Stokes for crying foul over umpire's call, says 'Batters will have to live with consequences'
IND vs ENG: Ben Stokes' call for scrapping the umpire's call while using DRS did not go down well with cricketer-turned commentator Ian Bishop.
Former West Indies pacer Ian Bishop has hit out at England's men's Test team captain Ben Stokes for suggesting that the umpire’s call should be abolished while making decisions via the Decision Review System (DRS). Stokes revealed that he addressed the issue when he met match referee Jeff Crowe alongside head coach Brendon McCullum after a — Ian Raphael Bishop (@irbishi) February 19, 2024 " target="_blank">434-run defeat in Rajkot. The all-rounder was not happy with Zak Crawley’s dismissal just before the tea break on Day 4.
Bishop feels that the batters should 'live with consequences' as they have no problem staying at the crease when the ball is clipping the stump and the umpire's call goes their way.
Bishop wrote on X: “The number of batters that carry on with a sense of righteous indignation whenever they are given out LBW & ball tracking shows the ball to be only clipping the stumps!! But we want to remove umpires call; OK then Batters will have to live with the consequences. Let’s go”
Stokes wants a ‘level playing field’
Stokes had a problem with the projection of the hawkeye showed on the TV screen when Crawley was given out. However, the match referee Crowe informed Stokes and McCullum that the decision was correct but the projection wasn't.
“I think when people are in charge of it says something has gone wrong that is enough in itself,” Stokes told talkSPORT.
“You just want a level playing field. The umpires have an incredibly hard job as it is, especially in India when the ball is spinning.
“My personal opinion is if the ball is hitting the stumps, it is hitting the stumps. They should take away umpire’s call, if I’m being perfectly honest.”
Crawley’s two controversial dismissals
Crawley’s dismissal has led to controversy twice in the Test series. In the Vizag Test when he was given out lbw, many felt that Kuldeep Yadav’s delivery should have missed the stumps or just clipped the leg stump. However, the decision was overturned as ball-tracking technology showed that it would have crashed into the leg stump.
In the Rajkot Test, he was dismissed lbw by Jasprit Bumrah. This time, the on-field umpire raised his finger while Crawley felt that it should have gone over the stumps.
