Big News: ICC bans Rizwan for 17 and half years for corrupting players in Abu Dhabi T10 League
The ban of 17 and half years on UK-based club cricketer Rizwan Javed is the second-longest in the history of the International Cricket Council.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned a UK-based club cricketer Rizwan Javed from all cricket for 17 and half years. This is the second-longest sentence handed out by the apex cricket board to date.
The ICC charged eight players and officials on behalf of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) in September 2023. The decision was taken by the ICC as the ECB's designated anti-corruption official under the code.
Rizwan has waived his right to a hearing and has been deemed guilty as he did not respond to the charges. The ban on Rizwan backdates to September 19, 2023, the day he was suspended from playing all forms of cricket.
Rizwan's last appearance in a club cricket game was for Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club in the Cheshire Cricket League. He has been found guilty of corrupting players in the T10 League, especially in the Pune Devils franchise.
In total, eight players were charged with corruption in the 2021 edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 League. The list of eight players and officials also includes Bangladesh’s Nasir Hossain who is currently serving a two-year ban.
Here’s the full list of charges against Rizwan:
Article 2.1.1 – Being party to an attempt to fix, contrive or influence improperly matches or aspects of matches in the Abu Dhabi T10 2021 (on three separate occasions).
Article 2.1.3 – Offering a Reward to another Participant in exchange for that player engaging in Corrupt Conduct.
Article 2.1.4 – Directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging or intentionally facilitating any Participant to breach Code Article 2.1 (on three separate occasions).
Article 2.4.4 - Failing to disclose to the DACO full details of any approaches or invitations received to engage in Corrupt Conduct under the Code.
Article 2.4.6 – Failing or refusing, without compelling justification, to cooperate with any investigation carried out by the DACO in relation to possible Corrupt Conduct under the Code.
Several attempts to corrupt young cricketers
ICC's General Manager Integrity, Alex Marshall said that the UK-based club cricketer was slapped with a lengthy ban for his repeated attempts to corrupt budding cricketers.
"Rizwan Javed has received a lengthy ban from cricket for his repeated and serious attempts to corrupt professional cricketers," Marshall said in an ICC media release.
"The sanction imposed should send a strong message to other corrupters trying to target cricket at any level and demonstrates that any attempt to corrupt cricket will be strongly dealt with."
