IND vs BAN, 1st Test: Bangladesh succumb to Jasprit Bumrah's four-fer fury as India take 308-run lead on Day 2 as Kohli-Rohit fail again

India ended the second day of the first Test against Bangladesh on a strong position, reaching 81 for three in their second innings and extending their overall lead to 308 runs. 

India extends lead on Day 2

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant were unbeaten at the crease when stumps were drawn. Earlier in the day, Bangladesh were bowled out for a paltry 149 in their first innings, giving India a massive first-innings lead of 227 runs. India resumed their first innings on 339/6 and lost all four remaining wickets for just 37 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin's century ended on 113, while Ravindra Jadeja fell for 86. Hasan Mahmud completed a five-wicket haul for Bangladesh, while Taskin Ahmed took three wickets.

Jasprit Bumrah's artistry on display

Jasprit Bumrah's bowling mastery proved too much for the struggling Bangladeshi batting lineup. Bumrah, along with Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Ravindra Jadeja, dismantled Bangladesh, bowling them out for a paltry 149 in their first innings. With a substantial first-innings lead of 227 runs, India ended the day on 81 for three, with Shubman Gill (33 off 64) and Rishabh Pant (12 off 13) at the crease.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli fail again

While the Indian pace attack dominated, the start of India's second innings was not ideal, as they lost both Rohit Sharma (5 off 7) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (10 off 17) within the first 28 runs. Rohit was caught off a Taskin Ahmed delivery by Zakir Hasan.

Yashasvi Jaiswal's dismissal was a result of his attempt to play an expansive drive against a full delivery from Nahid Rana. However, India's substantial first-innings lead meant that the early losses were not overly concerning. Virat Kohli (17 off 37) joined Shubman Gill at the crease, and the duo added 39 runs for the third wicket, providing the much-needed consolidation. Gill played some impressive shots, showcasing his power and timing. Shubman Gill's standout shot of the day was a short-arm jab through covers off Rana for a boundary. However, the day ended on a slightly sour note for India, as Virat Kohli was dismissed leg before wicket to spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Little did Kohli know that he had flicked the ball as he returned to the pavilion quietly without even asking for DRS. Despite the wicket falling, India's dominance remained evident throughout the day, which saw a total of 17 wickets fall. This is the highest number of wickets to fall on a single day at the Chepauk Stadium. Jasprit Bumrah, as usual, was the standout performer for India.
