Yashasvi Jaiswal surpassed Virat Kohli's all-time record for the highest runs in a bilateral Test series against England, moving ahead of former India captain's 655 runs as soon as he opened his run account in the fifth Test in Dharamsala on March 7. Next, Jaiswal aims to eclipse Sunil Gavaskar's record of 774 runs in a bilateral Test series for India. In the 2016 series against England on home soil, Virat Kohli amassed 655 runs, a total Jaiswal matched in just the first four matches of the current series.

Throughout this series, Jaiswal's performance has been outstanding. He opened with an 80-run inning in the first Test in Hyderabad, followed by consecutive double centuries in the second and third Tests, and accumulated over 100 runs in the fourth Test's two innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the Record Setter

Jaiswal has shattered several records in this series, including hitting the most sixes in both a single innings and across a series for India.
On the field, India dismissed England for 218 after England chose to bat first. Indian spinners, Kuldeep Yadav and R Ashwin, thoroughly outplayed England's batsmen. Kuldeep achieved a five-wicket haul, while Ashwin took four wickets. Ravindra Jadeja claimed the prized wicket of Joe Root.

Jaiswal surpasses Sunil Gavaskar's record

Jaiswal also eclipsed legend Sunil Gavaskar's previous record of 938 runs in eight Tests. Jaiswal has scored 1000-plus runs in as many Tests to bag the towering milestone. Batting great Gavaskar scored 774 runs in his debut series against the West Indies in 1970/71, holding the record for the most runs by an Indian in a single series until now.

Jaiswal also holds the record for the most runs scored by an Indian left-handed batsman in a Test series, becoming the sole Indian left-hander to amass over 600 runs in such a feat. During the series in Rajkot, Jaiswal overtook Sourav Ganguly as the top-scoring left-handed Indian batsman in a Test series, marking the occasion with a historic double century in his innings.
