In a significant announcement that promises to elevate the status of sports infrastructure in Sikkim, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang revealed plans on February 27 (Tuesday) to transform the Kitam Ground in Namchi district into a cricket stadium of international standards. This ambitious project aims to make Sikkim a new hotspot for cricket, with the potential to host both international and domestic cricket matches, attracting fans and players from around the globe to this picturesque region.

During a public gathering in Namchi, Chief Minister Tamang outlined his vision for cricket in Sikkim, highlighting that the state is on the verge of a major sports infrastructure boom.

"We have taken a decision to develop Kitam Ground as a world-class cricket stadium under the guidance of the BCCI," PTI quoted CM Tamang as saying.

Alongside the proposed world-class stadium at Kitam Ground, Sikkim will boast a total of three cricket stadiums, including the Yangang Ground and the Mining Ground in Rangpo, all under the auspices of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Major step to nurture talents

The announcement marks a significant milestone for Sikkim's sporting landscape, showcasing the state's commitment to nurturing cricket talent and offering top-notch facilities for the sport's development. The Mining Ground, which has been operational for Ranji Trophy matches over the past two years, serves as a testament to Sikkim's growing prominence in the cricketing world. The addition of the Kitam Ground to this list will further solidify Sikkim's position as a cricketing destination.

This strategic move by the Sikkim government not only aims to promote sports in the region but also to leverage cricket as a means to boost tourism and economic growth. With the picturesque backdrop of the Himalayas, the proposed world-class cricket stadium in Namchi is set to be a jewel in the crown of Sikkim's sports infrastructure, offering an unparalleled experience for players and spectators alike.

As Sikkim prepares to welcome cricket enthusiasts from across the world to its state-of-the-art stadiums, the future looks bright for cricket in the region.
