WATCH: India U-19 captain Uday Saharan and Bangladesh player involve in fiery verbal scuffle during INDvsBAN tie, umpire comes to rescue
Indian captain Uday Saharan was involved in a verbal altercation with Bangladesh's player Ariful Islam during Under-19 World Cup clash on January 20.
The Indian team's performance in their first match at the Under-19 World Cup 2024 match in Bloemfontein against Bangladesh on January 20 started off on a shaky note, but they eventually staged an impressive comeback to post a 251/7. In their Under-19 World Cup 2024 campaign opener, opting to field first after winning the toss, Bangladesh's bowlers quickly validated their captain's decision by dismissing two Indian batters early in the powerplay. This setback was countered by Adarsh Singh and captain Uday Saharan, who stepped up to stabilise the innings.
Playing the more aggressive role, Singh's performance allowed Saharan the time he needed to adjust. Once settled, both batsmen began to score more freely, with Singh reaching a half-century in 67 balls, while Saharan provided solid support. As their partnership approached the hundred-run mark, there was noticeable tension among the Bangladesh bowlers and fielders, and Indian captain Saharan appeared to be discontent with a certain aspect of the game.
Tensions escalated when it appeared that a fielder exchanged words with Indian captain Saharan during an over break, leading to a verbal confrontation with Ariful Islam in the 25th over. What started as a seemingly minor exchange quickly escalated into a full-blown argument, drawing in several other Bangladesh players, until the umpire stepped in to intervene. Even as the umpire attempted to defuse the situation, Saharan remained actively engaged in the dispute, continuing to address the Bangladesh players. The heated exchange eventually subsided after a couple of minutes, allowing play to resume. Following this, Saharan hit a fifty, and after Adarsh's dismissal at 76, he recognised the need to extend his innings.

Following the wicket, a lull in the game ensued with a succession of quiet overs, and the flow of boundaries came to a halt. In an attempt to accelerate the scoring, Saharan was dismissed for 64. Nevertheless, Priyansh Moliya and Sachin Dhas stepped up with aggressive batting towards the end, enabling India to surpass a total of 250 runs. The team now hopes this score will be sufficient to secure their first points in the tournament.
Notably, after posting a target of 252 India bowled out Bangladesh for a paltry 167 to win the match by 84 runs. It was Saumy Pandey who broke Bangladesh's batters back with his splendid four-fer.
