IPL 2024: Star India cricketer set to retire from Indian Premier League after upcoming season, to take final decision on international future soon

After beginning his Indian Premier League (IPL) career with the Delhi-based franchise, Dinesh Karthik went on to represent five more franchises in the cash-rich tournament.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik is set to feature in his last Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign during the upcoming season which is scheduled to begin on March 22. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, Karthik has decided to hang up his boots after the culmination of IPL 2024. One of the veterans of the cash-rich tournament, Karthik has featured in every edition of the cash-rich tournament which began back in 2008.

Dinesh Karthik's IPL career

The 38-year-old Karthik boasts a ton of experience when it comes to playing T20 cricket, especially IPL. The man from Tamil Nadu began his IPL career with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and has since gone on to represent six different franchises in the glitzy league. After his stint with the Delhi-based franchise, Karthik took his talents to Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) before signing with the Mumbai Indians.

Karthik played two seasons for the Gujarat Lions before becoming a core part of Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018. He went on the captain the Kolkata-based franchise before joining the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the second time.

Karthik's IPL numbers through the years

In his IPL career thus far, Karthik has played 240 matches and scored 4,516 runs at a strike rate of over 132. The right-handed aggressive batter has 20 half-centuries to his name. With the gloves in hand behind the stumps, Karthik has 133 dismissals to his name.

What about Karthik's international future?

While Karthik has decided to walk away from IPL after the upcoming season, the veteran cricketer hasn't decided on his international future yet. According to the report, Karthik is slated to make a final decision on his international future soon. Karthik has represented India across all three formats (26 Tests, 94 ODIs and 60 T20Is) but his last game for the country came in November 2022.
