IPL 2024, MI vs RCB: Bumrah's five-fer, Ishan and Suryakumar's blistering half-centuries blow away RCB at Wankhede Stadium, MI chase 197 in 15.3 overs
In the Indian Premier League (IPL) match held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 11 (Thursday), MI's star-studded team fired in unison, and as a result, the RCB were blown away.
On the back of Jasprit Bumrah's stupendous spell with the ball coupled with explosive half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by seven wickets with 27 balls to spare. In the Indian Premier League (IPL) match held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 11 (Thursday), MI's star-studded team fired in unison, and as a result, the RCB were blown away.
It was Mumbai's second win of the season and the franchise took their tally to two wins and three losses after five matches. On the flip side, RCB lost their fourth successive match of the campaign as their record went from bad to worse with just one win after six matches.
Ishan, Rohit and Suryakumar dazzle at home
Chasing a steep target of 197 runs, Mumbai openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma took a few deliveries initially to assess the condition as the new ball was nipping around. Once Kishan got the hang of the conditions, the left-handed batter unleashed hell on RCB bowlers. Rohit joined the party soon and the Mumbai Indians were off to a fabulous start.
At the end of the powerplay, Mumbai raced to 72/0, and 16 balls later, Ishan and Rohit brought up their 100-run alliance. After playing an entertaining knock, Ishan departed with 69 runs off 34 balls which he scored with the help of seven fours and five sixes.
Suryakumar Yadav walked in at No.3 and announced his arrival straightaway. Suryakumar dazzled and played some trademark shots that sent the crowd into a frenzy.
Rohit departed after scoring 38 runs off 24 balls with the help of three fours and three sixes but Suryakumar raced to a rapid half-century. After scoring 52 runs off 19 balls with the help of five fours and four sixes, Suryakumar departed with Mumbai on the cusp of another win.
Hardik finished the game with a stunning six and remained unbeaten on 21 runs off six balls. Mumbai chased the target in just 15.3 overs.
For RCB, Akash Deep, Vijaykumar Vyshak and Will Jacks bagged a wicket each.
Bumrah's magical spell outshine Karthik's blitz
Jasprit Bumrah delivered an outstanding performance with a five-wicket haul while Dinesh Karthik's explosive batting in the final overs captivated the onlookers after RCB were put into bat first. Karthik's pyrotechnics propelled RCB to a formidable score of 196/8 in 20 overs.
Faf du Plessis and Rajat Patidar made significant contributions, scoring 61 runs and 50 runs respectively, pushing RCB towards the 200-run target. Karthik's unbeaten 53 off 23 balls provided the perfect finish to the innings.
While other pacers struggled, Bumrah's precision and skillful use of variations stood out. He managed to dismiss the in-form Virat Kohli early in the game. Du Plessis and Patidar revitalised their innings with a partnership of 82 runs for the third wicket. Just when RCB were batters were looking berserk, Bumrah weaved his magic again.
Will Jacks, on his debut, scored 8 runs before being caught by Tim David off Madhwal, leading to an early setback for RCB.
Patidar, initially cautious, gained momentum to score his first fifty of the season, hitting some impressive shots. He continued his assault against Gerald Coetzee with two consecutive sixes but was dismissed shortly after.
Glenn Maxwell, whose role was crucial for RCB to achieve a high score, was dismissed for a duck by Shreyas Gopal, marking Gopal's 50th IPL wicket.
Bumrah finished with sensational figures of 5/21 in four overs. Coetzee, Gopal and Madhwal bagged a wicket each.
