Despite a 20-run defeat for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) against the Delhi Capitals (DC), skipper Sanju Samson continued his impressive run of form in the IPL 2024. He played a valiant knock of 86 runs off just 46 balls, peppered with eight fours and six sixes in RR's losing cause on May 7. Unfortunately, his efforts weren't enough to chase down a challenging target of 222 set by DC, as RR finished at 201 all out. Sanju's batting prowess has garnered praise from former Australian opener Matthew Hayden, who commended his ability to handle both pace and spin bowling effectively.

Matthew Hayden during a conversation with Star Sports said:

“Sanju Samson was batting like a dream, scoring 86 off 46 balls. He’s proven his worth time and again…Throughout the tournament, he’s been a master blaster, handling both spin and pace with finesse”.

After overcoming a period of inconsistency, Sanju Samson has rediscovered his top form in the IPL 2024. He currently leads the run-scorers among wicketkeepers, amassing an impressive 471 runs in just 11 matches with a blistering strike rate of 163.54. This remarkable performance has earned him a well-deserved spot in India's 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Samson will join Rishabh Pant as the team's wicketkeeper-batters.

Matthew Hayden further pointed out Sanju Samson’s controversial dismissal and stated the wicketkeeper batter needed a bit of luck.

“He times his innings well. He’s got the power. And the power is a big thing in T20 cricket. Yet, what stands out is his team. He just needed a bit of luck, especially towards the end of the match,” Hayden concluded.

Sanju Samson's dismissal creates controversy

Rajasthan Royals' chase took a hit in the 16th over as their captain, Sanju Samson, was dismissed in a contentious call. Batting brilliantly, Samson attempted a big shot but was caught by Shai Hope at long-off. However, replays showed the catch was made right at the boundary rope, raising suspicions of a possible touch. The on-field umpires initially ruled Samson out, sparking a heated reaction from the batsman. He argued his case vehemently with the umpires, visibly frustrated. The tension escalated as the decision was referred to the third umpire for a closer look. After scrutinizing the replays from various angles, the final verdict came out. This left the RR camp, including head coach Sangakkara, fuming on the sidelines.
