After giving a solid account of his all-round talent during the first two seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL) while playing for the Rajasthan Royals (RR), Ravindra Jadeja didn't play even a single match in the third edition of the cash-rich tournament in 2010. It was not because Jadeja was injured or had a personal reason to not participate in the competition. It was because Jadeja was suspended for indulging in anti-team activities.

Why was Ravindra Jadeja suspended?

The decision to suspend Jadeja was taken after it was confirmed that the all-rounder was personally negotiating a deal with other franchises. After the first season in which Jadeja played a crucial role in Rajasthan Royals winning the tournament, the all-rounder was offered a two-year deal by the franchise but he disagreed.

Instead, he signed a one-year contract extension and started negotiating with the other franchises in order to secure a much higher pay than what was offered by the Royals. After the BCCI and IPL governing bodies got to know about Jadeja's activities, they decided to suspend the all-rounder for one year on the grounds of 'breaching players guidelines'.

What did IPL say in its statement?

"Based on a unanimous decision taken by the IPL Governing Council and on instructions from the President of the BCCI, India cricketer Ravindra Jadeja was handed out a one year playing ban. He will not be allowed to play for any IPL team for the next one year," IPL had said in a statement at the time.

"The ban was on account of Ravindra Jadeja not signing the renewal contract with the Rajasthan Royals and attempting, instead to negotiate a larger financial contract with some of the other IPL franchises. Thus, resulting in a serious non-adherence to the IPL player guidelines," it said.

Jadeja returned in 2011

After serving his suspension, Jadeja returned to play IPL in 2011 but he never played for the Rajasthan Royals again. In 2011, Jadeja played for Kochi Tuskers Kerala before joining forces with the Chennai Super Kings next year. In the two years that CSK was suspended from the IPL, Jadeja represented Gujarat Lions. Since then, Jadeja has continued to represent the Super Kings in the cash-rich tournament.
