The absence of Jack Leach, England's most seasoned spinner, was a considerable loss for the Three Lions, particularly on Indian pitches that favor spin bowling.

England's cricket team faces a significant setback as their key spinner Jack Leach is sidelined due to a knee injury requiring surgery. The unfortunate injury occurred during the first Test against India in Hyderabad, where despite the pain, Leach heroically bowled 36 overs and secured two wickets, contributing to England's narrow victory by 28 runs. However, the triumph was bittersweet as Leach's condition worsened, ruling him out for the series' duration.

"I'm going to have an operation to get the rest of the swelling out because it's not budging," Leach told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"It was quite an unfortunate one. It was the second ball of the first innings on the field, so that whole game I was playing with this knee problem.

"I obviously knocked it a few times throughout that game, and it has just created a long period of recovery. I need to get the operation done and then hopefully I can get back to playing cricket. I'd love to have a run of playing cricket and getting into a bit of a rhythm again and, hopefully, that can happen again once I've got this sorted," he added.

England have done well in Jack Leach's absence

The absence of Leach, the squad's most seasoned spinner, is a considerable loss for England, particularly on Indian pitches that favor spin bowling. The other spinners in the tour party, stepping into India's challenging conditions, had yet to debut in a Test match there, highlighting the vacuum left by Leach's departure.

Amidst this adversity, newcomers Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir rose to the occasion, displaying commendable skill and determination. Hartley, in particular, made a spectacular entry into Test cricket by claiming nine wickets in his debut match, swiftly becoming the series's top wicket-taker with 18 wickets in seven innings. Bashir, replacing Leach from the second Test, showcased his talent with a remarkable performance in Ranchi, taking four crucial wickets to unsettle the Indian batting lineup.
