Disappointment turned to tears for Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) owner Kavya Maran as her team went down to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2024 final on May 26. SRH were comprehensively defeated by eight wickets at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, May 26. Their bid for glory crumbled after setting a paltry target of 114 runs. The Shreyas Iyer-led KKR chased down the target comfortably in just 10.3 overs, losing only two wickets in the process.

The cracks began to show for SRH right from the start. Having opted to bat first after winning the toss, they lost their opening batsman, Abhishek Sharma, in the very first over to a fiery Mitchell Starc delivery. Things went from bad to worse when Vaibhav Arora dismissed the dangerous Travis Head for a duck in his very first ball. The middle order failed to recover, with Rahul Tripathi also departing cheaply.  Despite Aiden Markram's 20 runs and a late cameo of 24 from Pat Cummins off just 19 balls, SRH could only muster a meager total of 113 runs on the board, setting the stage for a dominant KKR victory.

KKR clinch third title despite early setback

While SRH managed an early breakthrough by dismissing the dangerous Sunil Narine, a fiery opening partnership between Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer dashed their hopes. The wicket, which initially seemed challenging, was quickly tamed by the KKR openers who didn't allow SRH to settle with the ball. Venkatesh Iyer fittingly sealed the victory with the winning runs, finishing unbeaten on a well-made 52. This win marked a historic moment for the Kolkata Knight Riders, not only securing their third IPL title but also their second championship win in Chennai. Their first victory came back in 2012, defeating the Chennai Super Kings on their home turf.
