'Laga ki sher ghus gaya': Former CSK star recounts when MS Dhoni got angry and broke IPL rules in 2019 season
Mohit Sharma reminisced about a heated incident involving MS Dhoni during the IPL 2019. In a match against RR, ex-CSK captain lost his temper, leading to a violation of the IPL's code of conduct.
Legendary MS Dhoni, renowned for his calm and composed demeanor on the cricket field, is widely regarded as one of the greatest captains in the history of the game. He also earned a moniker of ‘Captain Cool’ by his fans as he had the ability to maintain composure even in the most intense and emotionally charged situations.
MS Dhoni's rare moment of anger in IPL
However, there was a rare instance during the IPL 2019 season when Dhoni's cool exterior cracked. In a match against the Rajasthan Royals, the former CSK captain lost his temper, resulting in a breach of the IPL Code of Conduct. Former CSK teammate and current Gujarat Titans pacer Mohit Sharma has now shared details of this incident, shedding light on Dhoni's unusual display of emotion.
During a 2019 IPL match between the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, a controversial incident unfolded in the final over. Ben Stokes bowled a full toss to Mitchell Santner that appeared to be above waist height. The no-ball siren sounded in the stadium, indicating a clear overstep. However, the square leg umpire, who had initially raised his hand to signal a no-ball, quickly retracted his gesture, claiming that he had never intended to call a no-ball. This decision infuriated MS Dhoni, who stormed onto the field to confront the umpires. Dhoni's outburst was a rare display of anger, starkly contrasting his usual calm demeanor. His actions led to a fine of 50% of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct.
Mohit Sharma recalls Dhoni's outburst
In a recent episode of the 2 Sloggers Podcast, Mohit Sharma shared insights into the moment when MS Dhoni lost his temper during an IPL match. Despite warnings from his teammates to refrain from confronting the umpires, Dhoni proceeded to the field. Sharma described the scene as if a lion had entered the arena, highlighting the intensity of Dhoni's anger.
"Hum log dugout mein the, hum chilla rahe the, mat jao, mat jao, mat jao. Lekin unhone peeche mud ke dekha bhi nahi. Voh aise gaye hain na, jab laga ki bhai sher ghus gaya hai (We were in the dugout and we were like 'Please don't go, don't go'. But he didn't even look behind. The way he went out on the field, then everyone was like that lion has entered the ground.)," Mohit said.
"He had just got out and was already furious. He wanted to be in there because generally, he doesn't leave it to others. He came, sat and all of a sudden, the incident happened. He asked, 'Did he give it a no-ball?' We were like, 'Yeah, he did signal.' Then he just didn't stop," he added.
