Former Indian cricketer Laxman Sivaramakrishnan has often been critical of Ravichandran Ashwin. Last year, he even called him a "selfish stats player". Ahead of Ashwin's 100th Test, Sivaramakrishnan claimed that India's ace off-spinner called to congratulate him, which was disconnected and his message went unanswered as well.

“Tried calling him a few times to wish him for his 100th Test. Just cut off my call. Sent him a message, no reply. That’s the respect we former cricketers get,” the 58-year-old said.

“Respect comes only from cultured people. Btw, I was earlier tweeting about a minor correction in his action and not criticizing him. If only people understood,” he further added.

The Chennai-born spinner faced flak on social media as a few questioned his experience as he did not have a long career in both Test and ODI cricket. He replied: “Have you all played more cricket than me, 9 tests 16 ODI’s ????”

Sivaramakrishnan had questioned Ashwin's performance in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) countries.

“Indian batsman are struggling against spin because the pitches in India are doctored for Ashwin in Test matches. Look at his record in SENA Countries,” he wrote.

He also alleged that Ashwin would not have been able to replace Harbhajan Singh had he not played under the leadership of MS Dhoni for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

“If not for CSK and MSD, he would have to wait longer as Harbhajan was bowling superbly at that time. Played for India, Left India Cement and went and joined the Rival Company Chemplast. What LOYALTY FROM THE GREAT MAN. You must build a temple for him. 1 full white ball state tournament bowled Leg-Spin, Anyone else would have been kicked out,” he wrote.

Ashwin’s chance to surpass Sri Lankan legend

Ashwin needs six more wickets to leave Australia's Nathan Lyon behind on the list of highest wicket-takers against England. If he gets eight wickets, he will surpass Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralidaran.

Ashwin to join the elite list

The moment Ashwin steps on the field, he will become the 13th Indian cricketer to make 100 Test appearances.
