Watch: Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada involved in nasty collision on boundary to take Kyle Mayers’ catch in must-win match
T20 World Cup 2024: Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada were involved in a nasty collision but none of them sustained any injuries and returned to the field.
As soon as England beat USA in their last Super 8 match, the Group 2 clash between co-hosts West Indies and South Africa turned into a virtual quarterfinal. As stakes were high, South Africa dominated the proceedings after Aiden Markram won the toss and opted to bowl first. They got early wickets as well to put West Indies under pressure. As the partnership between Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase started to look threatening, Markram created a chance. However, it ended in a nasty collision between his frontline pacers Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada.
The incident took place in the eighth over. Markram tossed it up and Mayers lofted it over his head. Long-off and long-on fielders Rabada and Jansen went for the catch. It is unclear if any of the two called for it. Unaware that both of them were charging, the two collided. While Rabada stayed inside the boundary, Jansen fell outside and was in pain.
The physio rushed to Jansen’s aide as Rabada’s right leg hit his stomach. Both players were taken off the field. However, there were no visible injuries and the players returned to the field after a few overs.
Rabada bowls in death overs
Rabada had not bowled a single over before he got involved in a collision. He was introduced into the attack in the 18th over. On the first ball, Andre Russell was run out by Anrich Nortje trying to sneak a single. Then, he got the wicket of Akeal Hosein. He bowled the last over as well. He was hit for a six by Alzarri Joseph. 11 runs were scored in the final over of the innings as West Indies posted 135/8 on the board.
Jansen’s opening spell
Earlier, Jansen got South Africa off to a terrific start. He dismissed Shai Hope for a golden duck as Tristan Stubbs took a sharp catch at cover-point. The left-arm pacer would have got Roston Chase's wicket in his second over but Nortje dropped the catch. He conceded 17 runs from two overs and did not return to bowl after the collision.
