Massive blow to Pakistan as ICC slaps Shan Masood's brigade with hefty fine along with docked WTC points

Shan Masood-led Pakistan suffered a humiliating 10-wicket defeat against Bangladesh in the first Test match held at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday. To add to their disappointment, Pakistan has also been penalised by ICC for maintaining a slow overrate during the match.

Pakistan docked WTC points after 1st Test defeat against Bangladesh

The ICC announced on Monday, August 26 that Pakistan had fallen six overs short of the required overrate, resulting in a deduction of six World Test Championship (WTC) points. Bangladesh, who were three overs short, have also been punished with a three-point deduction.

Pakistani players were fined 30% of their match fees, while Bangladesh players were penalized 15% for the slow overrate offense. The captains of both teams, Shan Masood and Najmul Hossain Shanto, admitted their guilt and accepted the penalties, avoiding formal hearings.

Due to the penalty points, Pakistan remains in eighth place in the World Test Championship standings, while Bangladesh drops to seventh, falling behind South Africa.

Bangladesh's victory in the first Test against Pakistan propelled them to the joint fifth position in the World Test Championship table.

Shakib Al Hasan fined for Code of Conduct Breach

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was fined 10% of his match fee and awarded a demerit point for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Shakib threw the ball at Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan during the 33rd over of the second innings after Rizwan had stepped back.

Shakib's penalty was imposed under Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which addresses "using a ball or other object that may endanger the safety of a player, umpire, or spectator."

The Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct related to:

“throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee, or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match.”

Pakistan made a promising beginning on a batting-friendly pitch, with Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan both scoring centuries. Declaring their innings at 448 runs, Pakistan gave Bangladesh a target to chase. In response, Bangladesh's Mushfiqur Rahim and Shadman Islam formed a formidable partnership, taking their team to a total of 565 runs. Bangladesh's substantial first-innings lead of 117 runs put them in a strong position for the second innings.

On Day 5, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib al Hasan bowled superbly, taking seven wickets between them and limiting Pakistan to 146 runs. Bangladesh's victory was assured as they needed only 30 runs to win. Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam remained unbeaten as Bangladesh clinched a comprehensive 10-wicket win.
