Massive update on India's new T20I captain as BCCI to announce Rohit Sharma's successor after this tour, Check details here
BCCI is set to announce Team India's new T20I captain right after the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Earlier, Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is after India's T20 World Cup title triumph.
After Rohit Sharma's T20I retirement, BCCI is set to announce India's new captain for the shortest format after the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe, Sports Tak reported. Earlier, Rohit Sharma called it quits to T20I cricket right after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 title after beating South Africa in a thrilling final on June 29. Following this, India will start gearing up for the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe which is slated to start from July 6. Notably, Shubman Gill-led India will play a total of five T20Is in the series. And right after the series, Rohit's successor as India's new T20I captain will be announced in consultation with the new head coach, as per Sports Tak.
India’s squad for T20I series against Zimbabwe:
Ꮪhubman Gill (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Shivam Dube, Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, Tushar Deshpande.
BCCI Faces a Pleasant Dilemma with Captaincy Options
With plenty of options to choose from, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) finds itself in a favorable yet challenging position. KL Rahul was once considered a potential successor to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. However, having been out of action for a while, he seems unlikely to be named skipper at the moment. Shreyas Iyer, who led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title, is another strong contender. With Gautam Gambhir as the KKR mentor and now in line to be India's next head coach, the prospect of a Shreyas-Gautam duo at the international level is intriguing. Sanju Samson, with his experience leading the Rajasthan Royals, is another name in the mix. Additionally, Jasprit Bumrah, who won the Player of the Tournament in the Men's T20 World Cup 2024, could also be a suitable candidate for captaincy.
However, with several strong options available, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, and Hardik Pandya are the most likely candidates to take over as India's next T20I skipper.
