Reportedly, India's batting maestros Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of their availability for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka next month.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Opt In for Sri Lanka ODIs

As per Indian Express, BCCI senior selection committee prepares for a virtual meeting on Thursday evening. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah is currently in Sri Lanka attending the International Cricket Council's annual conference.

There were initial reports suggesting senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might be rested for the upcoming Sri Lanka series. However, it seems both players have agreed to participate. This is likely due to the series being the first under the leadership of new head coach Gautam Gambhir. Kohli and Rohit have experience playing alongside Gambhir during his playing days for the national team, making their presence a show of support.

The selection committee has reportedly chosen Suryakumar Yadav to lead the Indian team for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. Hardik Pandya, India's vice-captain during the T20 World Cup, appears to have missed out on the captaincy role. Concerns regarding his fitness are a potential reason for this decision. Rohit Sharma will retain his leadership position for the ODI format during the series against Sri Lanka. This series holds significant importance for India's ODI team. With limited matches before next year's Champions Trophy, the Sri Lanka series provides a crucial opportunity to build momentum and refine their strategies.

Suryakumar Yadav to lead India in T20Is vs Sri Lanka

While Suryakumar Yadav is named captain for the upcoming T20I series, a report from the Indian Express suggests his performance will be closely monitored. The BCCI is not afraid to make changes if he doesn't meet expectations. However, their long-term vision appears clear: they see Suryakumar as a potential leader for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Young Talent gets a chance

Despite a quiet debut in the recent T20I series against Zimbabwe, Rajasthan Royals batsman Riyan Parag has impressed the selectors with his performances in the IPL. He is likely to be included in both the ODI and T20I squads for the Sri Lanka series, offering him a chance to further prove his worth.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer is making a comeback in the ODI team. After being excluded from the BCCI's annual contract earlier this year due to disciplinary issues, his return paves the way for a potential reinstatement. With Hardik Pandya unavailable for the ODIs, Mumbai all-rounder Shivam Dubey gets a golden opportunity to showcase his abilities. His inclusion in both squads could solidify his place in the national team.
