India's superstar pacer Mohammed Shami has underwent a successful surgery on his heel. Shami took to social media to share the update on his heel surgery on Monday (February 26). However, he also said that he would need time to regain full fitness and return to playing cricket.

β€œJust had a successful heel operation on my Achilles tendon! Recovery is going to take some time, but looking forward to getting back on my feet,” Shami wrote.

Shami's absence since ODI World Cup final

Shami has been absent from cricketing action since participating in the 2023 ODI World Cup final at Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19. He was unavailable for the T20I series against Australia in India, as well as the subsequent tour to South Africa. Later, it was revealed that Shami would be sidelined for the entire five-match Test series against England to undergo surgery in the United Kingdom.

Initially, he was hopeful of recuperating in time for the series against England, but the injury proved to be more severe than initially anticipated. However, Shami's absence opened doors for players such as Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep, among others. However, despite Shami's absence, India went on to win the five-match Test series with a stunning victory over England in the Ranchi Test.

In January, Shami expressed his hope to be fit in time for the series against England, but unfortunately, luck was not on his side.

"My rehabilitation is well on track and the medical experts at NCA are happy with my progress," Shami had told TOI.

No IPL for Mohammed Shami

Shami's ankle injury also ruled him out of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), where he was set to play for Shubham Gill-led Gujarat Titans. In 2022, Shami claimed 20 wickets during the season when the Titans clinched their first-ever IPL championship, with Hardik Pandya as their captain, who has since joined the Mumbai Indians.

Recently honored with the Arjuna Award, Shami boasts a remarkable record of 229 wickets in Test matches, 195 in ODIs, and 24 in T20Is over his ten-year career span.
