'My prediction is a 3-1 win for...': Sunil Gavaskar's bold verdict on Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-2025 winners
Batting great Sunil Gavaskar has given his verdict on Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-2025 winners. India and Australia will play a five-match Test series slated to start from November 22.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-2025 is set to be a thrilling contest between India and Australia. Former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has made his prediction for the series, backing India to win 3-1. He believes that Australia's batting woes will put them on the back foot. The rivalry between these two cricketing giants has intensified in recent years, with India dominating both at home and away. The upcoming series will feature five Tests, one more than in previous editions, making it an even more exciting prospect for fans.
The Aussies are ripe for the taking once again: Sunil Gavaskar
India has had a strong record against Australia in recent tours, winning series both home and away. However, in the decisive World Test Championship final, Australia emerged victorious, showcasing their resilience and skill. As the two teams prepare for the upcoming Test series, Sunil Gavaskar has highlighted potential challenges for Australia. He talked about batting concerns and India's tendency to start slowly in SENA countries. In his column for Mid-day, he further elaborated on these points.
"With their opening batting problems exacerbated after the retirement of David Warner and the middle-order also a bit dodgy, the Aussies are ripe for the taking once again,” Gavaskar wrote in his column.
"India being usual slow starters in an overseas series in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries the first Test will be crucial. That they aren’t playing proper first-class games before that as well as in the week-long gaps between some Test matches could work against them," Gavaskar's column added.
Sunil Gavaskar backs India to win Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Gavaskar expressed concerns about the limited preparation time for young Indian batters. Despite this, he remains optimistic about the series, believing it will showcase the true essence of Test cricket. He added:
"That said, it is how schedules are nowadays for most touring sides. It is tough on inexperienced newcomers as Yashasvi Jaiswal found in South Africa last year. He came back brilliantly with over 700 runs against England at home. It’s going to be an exciting series for sure with the talent that is there on both sides and it will also show why Test match cricket is the ultimate format of our beloved game. Oh, and my prediction is a 3-1 win for India,” Sunil Gavaskar concluded.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy will kick off on November 22 at Optus Stadium in Perth. The series will feature a day-night Test in Adelaide on December 6th. The remaining matches will be played at the Gabba in Brisbane (December 14th), Melbourne Cricket Ground (December 26th), and Sydney (January 3).
