Not Ruturaj Gaikwad or Shubman Gill, this India star adjudged Player of the Series award in IND vs ZIM's T20I outing

Star all-rounder Washington Sundar has won the Player of the Series award in the five-match T20I series between India and Zimbabwe which Men in Blue won with a 4-1 scoreline.

India's first series following their historic 2024 T20 World Cup victory offered a glimpse into the team's impressive talent pool. While fielding a much-changed lineup, India ultimately defeated Zimbabwe 4-1 in a five-match T20I series.

India Clinch T20I Series After Early Stumble

Despite a disappointing start, a 13-run loss in the opening T20I, the Men in Blue displayed remarkable resilience. They bounced back emphatically, winning the next four matches convincingly. The second T20I saw India crush Zimbabwe by a massive 100 runs, followed by a more controlled 23-run victory in the third game.  Their dominance continued in the fourth T20I, where they comfortably chased down the target with all ten wickets remaining.  The series concluded on a high note for India, securing a convincing 42-run win in the final match.

Young Guns Light Up Batting Order, Sundar Steals the Show

India's young guns stole the spotlight with the bat throughout the T20I series against Zimbabwe. The top order, in particular, showcased their explosive potential. Abhishek Sharma led the charge in the second game, blasting a phenomenal century off just 47 balls. Captain Shubman Gill anchored the innings throughout the series with two well-constructed half-centuries. Ruturaj Gaikwad impressed with his aggressive strokeplay, amassing 133 runs in four innings at a blistering strike rate of 158.33.  Despite playing only three matches, Yashasvi Jaiswal showed his talent with a solid 141 runs. Additionally, Sanju Samson and Rinku Singh capitalized on their opportunities, making valuable contributions to the team's success.

Washington Sundar pockets Player of the Series award

However, in a surprising turn of events, the Player of the Series (POTS) award went to Washington Sundar, not one of the star batsmen.  Making a strong comeback to the national team after missing the 2024 T20 World Cup squad, Sundar displayed his all-round capabilities with impressive performances with both bat and ball.  This was a welcome redemption arc after a frustrating IPL 2024 where he managed only two appearances as an impact substitute for the Sunrisers Hyderabad.  Sundar's impactful performance in the T20I series serves as a reminder of his valuable skillset and versatility.

Despite limited batting opportunities (only playing twice in the series), Washington Sundar emerged as the series' joint-highest wicket-taker with an impressive tally of eight scalps. His economical bowling was a key factor in India's success, with a miserly average of just 5.16 runs per over.
