Numbers speak: Ahead of T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit Sharma's T20I captaincy record better than MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli

As India look to end the ICC Trophy debut, Rohit Sharma will be leading the side in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies. This will be the second time Rohit will be leading India in the T20I format of the World Cup. 
 

Before the tournament kicks off in the Americas, here’s a look at his captaincy record in T20Is -

While Rohit became the T20I captain after the dismal run in T20 World Cup 2021, he made his T20I captaincy debut in 2017. Since then, he has led India in 54 T20Is. Under his leadership, India have won 41 games, lost 12 whereas one ended in a tie. His win percentage is 75.92, better than any Indian captain in the history of the format (minimum five games as captain).
 

MS Dhoni who led India to inaugural T20 World Cup trophy has a win percentage of 59.28. He has led India in 72 games. Virat Kohli's win percentage is 64.58 from 50 games.
 

When Rohit got the T20I captaincy

In 2021, Kohli relinquished the T20I captaincy. He announced that T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE will be his last assignment as T20I captain. In the same year, he stepped down as the captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as well. Within six months, Rohit became India’s all-format captain.

How Rohit-led India fared in T20 World Cup 2022

Under Rohit’s leadership, India were impressive in the bilateral series. In the six games, India won four. Their only defeat in the group stage was against South Africa. In the semifinal, they lost to Jos Buttler’s England that went on to win the trophy. 
 

Rohit’s hiatus from T20I squad

It seemed as if Rohit has bid goodbye to T20I cricket. Hardik Pandya led India in the T20I series after the semifinal defeat. But Rohit had shifted his focus on the World Test Championship (WTC) and the ODI World Cup 2023 at home. India suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the final to Australia. During the ODI World Cup, Pandya got injured too. Once again, reports suggested that Rohit will don the captaincy in the T20I format. 
 

Rohit’s T20I comeback

Rohit was named the captain of the T20I squad. He made a comeback in the three-T20I series against Afghanistan. Later, he revealed that he had a conversation with the selectors and team management that he wants to focus on other format considering the big events. That was the reason behind his absence from the T20I squad. 
 

Rohit chasing milestone

India will begin their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against Ireland in New York. He is also chasing a milestone in T20 World Cup. The opener needs 37 more runs to become the third batter to score 1,000 runs in the tournament's history.
