After dismissing Rohit Sharma on international debut, Bangladesh pacer faces backlash over misogynistic Social Media posts
After a notable international debut, Tanzim Hasan Sakib is under scrutiny for his controversial posts on women, sparking outrage and demands for BCB intervention.
Bangladesh's young pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib has embroiled himself in controversy shortly after making a commendable international debut. A series of his social media posts, perceived as misogynistic and demeaning towards women, have come under intense scrutiny.
Tanzim's posts, which many view as undermining the dignity of women, have drawn significant backlash, particularly from women on social media platforms. They have called on the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
One of Tanzim's contentious Facebook posts from last year, when translated, reads:
"If the wife works, the husband's rights are not ensured. If the wife works, the child's rights are not ensured. If the wife works, her elegance is damaged. If the wife works, the family is ruined. If the wife works, the veil is ruined. If the wife works, society is ruined."
Furthermore, he made another post suggesting men should avoid women with numerous male friends at university, implying that their offspring wouldn't be 'modest'.
These derogatory remarks have been met with sharp criticism, especially considering the significant contribution of women in Bangladesh's garment industry, which produces the national team's jerseys. The BCB is reportedly reviewing the situation and is expected to release a statement in due course.
Prominent feminists and activists have not held back in their criticism of Tanzim. Jannatun Nayeem Prity, a Paris-based feminist writer, commented on the issue, stating to The Times of India:
"I feel sorry for you that you don't consider your mother a normal human being."
Another writer, Swakrito Noman, labelled Tanzim's comments as 'deeply offensive' in a Facebook post.
While Tanzim should have been basking in the glory of his debut performance, which included dismissing Indian captain Rohit Sharma during the Asia Cup, he now faces potential repercussions for his controversial remarks on social media.
