IPL Bad Boys: Offered 60 lakhs for one over, released from Tihar to get married: Story of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy winner whose career ended at Rajasthan Royals

When spot-fixing charges marred the Indian Premier League's (IPL) sixth edition, three Rajasthan Royals (RR) players' name came to the fore. Maharashtra-born left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan was one of them. Chavan was a handy bowler for RR. He played three seasons before he was suspended and banned from all forms of cricket by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He went down as one of the ‘bad boys’ of IPL history.  
 

Chavan’s IPL career

Chavan made his IPL debut in the 2011 edition for RR against now-defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala. He played two games in his debut season and could not pick up a single wicket. In the 2012 edition, he played seven games and picked up seven wickets. It was in the 2013 edition, he was arrested for spot-fixing charges. 
 

60 lakhs for one over?

As per the police, Chavan was promised Rs 60 lakhs to concede 14 runs in the game against Mumbai Indians (MI). He ended up giving away 15 runs in his second over. The southpaw was arrested alongside S Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila. Following his arrest, Air India immediately suspended him. Later, he was put in judicial custody in New Delhi's Tihar Central Jail.

Released from Tihar to get married

He was granted special bail to get married. Later, he was granted bail with the other accused players. On September 13, 2013, Chavan and Sreesanth faced a life-ban However, on July 25, 2015, the Delhi Court gave him a clean chit and cleared him of all charges.

Six years later, BCCI lifted the ban on Chavan and Sreesanth. After the ban was lifted, Chavan informed his employer Air India and wished to play corporate and club-level cricket. 
 

Ranji Trophy-winning member

The 38-year-old has eight wickets from 13 games at an average of 40.75. His economy rate is 7.89 runs per over. He made his First-Class debut in 2008. He has 53 wickets from 18 games including best bowling figures of 9 for 23. He was a part of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy 2012-13 squad. He emerged as the no.1 spinner for Mumbai and helped them win the 40th title. In List A cricket, he has 18 wickets from 20 games.
