Big News: Pakistan superstar player comes out of retirement, makes himself available for T20 World Cup 2024
Pakistan's star all-rounder Imad Wasim has come out of retirement to make himself available for upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Imad Wasim took this decision after a meeting with PCB.
In a surprising turn of events, Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim reversed his retirement decision on Saturday, March 23 and has made himself available for selection in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to start from June 2, later this year.
Just last November, Wasim had shocked fans by announcing his retirement from international cricket. His most recent T20I appearance for Pakistan came in April 2023. Some reports suggested a rift between Wasim and former captain Babar Azam, potentially influencing his decision. However, with Shaheen Afridi taking over the T20I captaincy from Babar, the situation seems to have changed for Wasim. Imad recently hinted at a possible return and confirmed that Shaheen had contacted him to gauge his interest in playing in the T20 World Cup. This has now culminated in Wasim officially coming out of retirement.
“I am happy to announce that pursuant to meeting PCB officials, I have reconsidered my retirement and am delighted to declare my availability for Pakistan cricket in T20i format leading up to ICC T20i World Cup 2024,” Imad wrote in a post on X.
“I would like to thank the PCB for reposing trust in me and I would give my very best to bring laurels to my country. Pakistan comes first!” he further added.
Imad Wasim's stellar PSL performance fuelled World Cup talk
Calls for Wasim's inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad intensified after his impressive showing in the recently concluded 2024 Pakistan Super League (PSL). Playing for Islamabad United, Wasim was instrumental in their record-breaking third title win. The all-rounder was a force to be reckoned with throughout the tournament. He capped off a magnificent final with a stellar performance, claiming a five-wicket haul and scoring an unbeaten 19 runs to secure victory for his team. Overall, Wasim finished the PSL season with 12 wickets and 126 runs to his name. A seasoned campaigner, Wasim boasts 66 T20I appearances for Pakistan, taking 65 wickets. The T20 World Cup is set to be held from June 1st to 29th, with Pakistan placed in Group A alongside India, Ireland, Canada, and co-hosts USA. Wasim's recent form adds an interesting angle to Pakistan's World Cup preparation, with fans and analysts alike debating his potential role in the upcoming tournament.
