Parthiv Patel has come out in defence of Shubman Gill and said that he was unlucky to be out for a duck during the first day of the opening Test match against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, on September 19 (Thursday). As the Indian batter attempted to play a ball down the leg side, Hasan Mahmud dismissed Gill. Gill would get a little bat on the ball that straight went into Litton Das' hands. On the first day of the first test match against Bangladesh, Gill was a part of India's collapse at the top of the order, along with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who were dismissed for six runs each. Parthiv, in an interview with JioCinema, explained that Gill's dismissal was an instinctual play since he was remaining ahead of his popping crease to negate the seam and swing that was being offered.

"I think he was unlucky. When you get out down the leg side, it is a bit of an instinctive shot. His game plan is to stay ahead of the popping crease. He stays almost half ahead of the popping crease. He tries to negotiate that swing or seam, which a bowler is getting. But in cricket we say there are two unluckiest dismissals. One is to get run out at the non striker and or or you get out down the legside and caught behind and that's exactly what happened with Shubman Gill," said Parthiv.

Parthiv said that batters usually don't leave a delivery like that down the leg side, believing the bat would go there on instinct to try and get a boundary.

"You don't really leave that ball. Once you see that ball going down the leg side, your bat instinctively goes there and sometimes you know if you get a slightly better part of the bat, you may get it to a boundary. But otherwise, this time I thought Shubman was unlucky that he got a faint edge," said Parthiv.
