'Poor batting performance by us': Shubman Gill lashes out at Gujarat Titans batters for 33-run loss on 'good wicket to bat on'
LSG vs GT, IPL 2024: Shubman Gill lost his wicket in the sixth over of the run chase to Yash Thakur. Gujarat Titans lost the match by 33 runs.
Gujarat Titans (GT) batters lacked application and failed to stitch partnerships as they were bowled out for 130 in the run chase of 164 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). 54 runs were scored in the powerplay overs but GT batters lost the plot in middle overs despite pace sensational Mayank Yadav's absence in the middle overs. GT skipper Shubman Gill felt that bowlers did a good job but their batters put up a poor performance.
“It was a good wicket to bat on, a poor batting performance by us. We got a decent start, but we lost wickets in the middle and couldn't recover from that. Our bowlers were exceptional as they restricted them to 160-odd, just that our batters let us down,” Gill told the broadcasters after the loss.
Gill missing Miller in middle order
In David Miller's absence, Kane Williamson was included in the side and was promoted to no.3. However, in the two games he has failed to justify his selection. In the run chase, he was dismissed for a single-digit score as Ravi Bishnoi took a spectacular one-handed catch. Gill is missing Miller’s presence in the middle order.
“Miller is a kind of a player who can change a game in a couple of overs, because I think this total was very gettable for us,” he said.
How Gill lost his wicket
Gill was playing a supporting role in the powerplay overs as Sai Sudharsan took on the bowlers. On the last ball of the powerplay overs, he got bowled by Yash Thakur who went on to take a five-wicket haul. He missed a full delivery, played across the line and got bowled. The 24-year-old explained how he lost his wicket.
“I thought it was the last over of the powerplay and I just wanted to make the most of it, just that I missed that ball as I tried to play a bit too square,” he said.
After their third loss of the season from five games, GT stayed at the seventh position. They will go up against table-toppers Rajasthan Royals on April 10.
