'The problem with spinners in India...': SRH coach Muttiah Muralitharan blames spinners for record-breaking scores in IPL 2024

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) spin bowling coach Muttiah Muralitharan has pointed out spinners' mistakes that has led to big scores in the Indian Premier League (IPL) so far. On the eve of SRH's clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Muralitharan pointed out that spinners are bowling with more pace rather than turning the ball. 
 

While SRH have been breaking records with their top order firing in all cylinders, SRH’s spinners have not been that effective. They are missing the services of Sri Lankan leggie Wanindu Hasaranga who pulled out of the tournament due to injury. Muralitharan explained why bowling quicker as a spinner is not viable in the IPL nowadays.
 

"The problem with spinners in India who are playing at the moment is most of the spinners are not spinning the ball. That is the main criteria because they are bowling a little quicker, so no deviation. If you see in practice, batsmen are used to throw-downs and power-hitting, So they are now used to it if the ball is coming straight at 85-90 mph, and it comes straight their muscle memory is already practised to it. If it deviates, brain does not know how to react, so that's why spinners must learn how to spin the ball then they have a better chance," he said in the press conference.

Muralitharan backs the new style of play

Before the double-header Sunday, SRH were at the third place with five wins from eight games. SRH lost their previous game to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) while chasing. Ahead of the CSK game at Chepauk, Muralitharan defended the players for playing a certain brand of cricket.
 

"We are looking to play a particular brand of cricket. We have lost a couple of games along the way, but despite the results, if the team plays according to the style of cricket we want to, the coaches will be happy," the legendary spinner said.

"A team can't win all the games and there are going to be defeats. If we are able to win 60 per cent of our games, we have a great chance to make the playoffs," he further added.
