In an exhilarating encounter at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on March 7 (Wednesday), Lahore Qalandars notched up their much-awaited first win of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 9. Battling against Islamabad United on a vibrant Wednesday night, the Qalandars defended a competitive total of 162 runs, showcasing a masterclass in bowling led by captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and masterfully supported by Zaman Khan

Rassie van der Dussen scores half-century

The Qalandars' innings was bolstered by Rassie van der Dussen's stellar half-century, guiding the team to post 162/7 despite facing consistent wicket losses. The match ignited from the outset with Naseem Shah delivering a maiden opening over, setting the tone for what was to be a pressure-driven game for the Lahore opening batters.

Early on, Lahore found themselves in a precarious position at 30/3, but a strategic partnership between Shaheen Shah Afridi and van der Dussen for the fourth wicket provided the necessary momentum. Afridi's explosive 30 off 14 balls, decorated with four sixes, injected vitality into the innings. Meanwhile, van der Dussen's composed 64 runs off 44 balls, including four fours and four sixes, anchored the Qalandars to a respectable total.

Shaheen and Zaman wreak havoc with new ball

Islamabad United's chase was immediately met with adversity, as the Qalandars' bowlers unleashed havoc, claiming five wickets in the powerplay. A notable fielding effort by Jahandad and a succession of wickets from Zaman dramatically reduced United's batting lineup to 39/6 by the seventh over.

Despite a fighting partnership between Faheem Ashraf and Azam Khan, and later Naseem Shah joining Faheem, their efforts were insufficient to chase down the target. Shaheen Shah Afridi's landmark achievement of his 100th PSL wicket highlighted the match, marking him as the youngest and fastest player to reach this milestone.

Zaman Khan emerged as the standout bowler for Lahore, claiming four crucial wickets, while Afridi contributed with two. The combined efforts of the Qalandars' bowlers ensured a tight grip on the match, culminating in a 17-run victory over Islamabad United.

Lahore's first win in 8 matches

This victory not only ended Lahore Qalandars' winless streak in the tournament but also demonstrated their capability to bounce back strongly. With standout performances from both batters and bowlers, the Qalandars are now looking forward to carrying this momentum into their upcoming fixtures in IPL 2024.
