Rahul Dravid will be stepping down as India's head coach in the coming June as his stint is set to get over after the conclusion of T20 World Cup 2024, confirmed BCCI secretary Jay Shah. BCCI will be soon releasing an advertisement for India's head coach role as Dravid is set to relinquish the post after the marquee tournament which is set to start from June 2.

Notably, Dravid assumed the role in November 2021 and his contract was subsequently extended to encompass the 2023 ODI World Cup. As there are no intentions for a further extension beyond June 2024, the BCCI has begun the process of searching for his successor. The BCCI has indicated that the new head coach could potentially be a foreigner and that Dravid is welcome to reapply for the position.

"Rahul's tenure is only up to June. So if he wants to apply, he is free to do so. We cannot determine whether the new coach will be Indian or foreign. It will be up to the CAC, and we are a global body," Jay Shah told Cricbuzz recently.

Though Rahul Dravid extended his coaching stint after India's World Cup 2023 final loss to lead them in the T20 World Cup 2024, but looks like he might not re-apply when the BCCI searches for a long-term replacement.

Coach Dravid's reign hasn't been without success. India brought home the Asia Cup 2023 title and reached the finals of both the ODI World Cup 2023 and the T20 World Cup 2022 under his leadership. He's aiming to end his tenure on a high note with another shot at an ICC trophy at the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA.

With a jam-packed cricket calendar featuring two ODI World Cups (2025 & 2027), a home T20 World Cup in 2026, and potential World Test Championship finals appearances (2025 & 2027), the BCCI is considering a long-term coaching solution.

“There is no precedent of different coaches for different formats in Indian cricket. Besides, we have a number of players who are all-format players. Ultimately, it is the Cricket Advisory Committee's (CAC) call. I have to implement what they decide,” Shah added.
