Former Sri Lankan cricketer Russell Arnold sees India's decision to bat Rishabh Pant at number 3 during the T20 World Cup warm-up match against Bangladesh as a strategic move that expands their batting options. With both Yashasvi Jaiswal unavailable and Virat Kohli still finding his rhythm after a late arrival, India experimented with Pant in the crucial number 3 position. This gamble paid off handsomely. Returning to the national team after a break exceeding 500 days, Pant played a blistering knock, scoring 53 runs off just 32 balls. The highlight of his innings was three mighty sixes against the experienced Shakib Al Hasan. Pant, demonstrating his all-round capabilities, also took a couple of catches before retiring out after reaching his fifty. India eventually secured a convincing 60-run victory. In a post-match interview with Star Sports, Arnold commended Pant's execution of the role, highlighting the importance of boosting the player's confidence after such a long absence from international cricket. This experiment suggests that India might be exploring more flexible batting strategies for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

"I appreciate the manner in which he executed the plan. It's evident that Rishabh Pant has been out of action for quite a while. Thus, getting runs under his belt and regaining confidence is paramount. Whether he enters the fray mid-game or not, accumulating runs is essential for him. It's all about boosting his morale. Therefore, the decision proved to be a wise one," Arnold told Sports Star.

Pant's success opens up batting flexibility

Russell Arnold sees Rishabh Pant's successful outing at number 3 as a significant development for India. He suggests that Pant's performance offers the team an additional batting alternative. The former Sri Lankan cricketer believes this flexibility allows India to strategically deploy Pant if needed. For instance, Pant could be used to inject momentum into the game by coming in earlier during an innings and playing his aggressive style. This tactical option could prove valuable for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

"Now they have an extra option. They need a left-hander early and need some oomph, and in comes Rishabh. So they created more options for themselves and will be a happy bunch. At the end of it," Arnold added.

Pant and Pandya power India to victory in warm-up

Rishabh Pant's explosive knock of 53 runs off just 32 balls set the tone for India's strong performance in their warm-up match against Bangladesh.  His innings, which included a thrilling hat-trick of sixes, was crucial in helping India post a commanding total of 182 runs in their 20 overs. Hardik Pandya also chipped in with a quickfire 40 off 23 balls towards the end, adding valuable runs to the scoreboard. Bangladesh's chase faltered from the beginning. The Indian bowlers dominated throughout, preventing any significant partnerships from forming.  Bangladesh eventually fell short, managing only 122 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs. With a convincing win under their belt, India will now shift their focus to their first group stage match of the T20 World Cup 2024, where they will face Ireland on June 5.
