Exclusive: Rishabh Pant set to be included in India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad, Rohit Sharma-led team likely to be announced on this date
Rishabh Pant is likely to be included in India's T20 World Cup squad. Pant is currently featuring in Indian Premier League 2024 and leading Delhi Capitals.
Star batter Rishabh Pant is likely to be considered in India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 which is set to start from June 2 later this year. A source in the know of development exclusively told Sports Tak that since selectors are keeping close eyes on each targeted players, Pant is one of them. He might get a call during the selection meeting as he has proved his performance. However, he will be closely monitored as to how fit he is going further but as of now he looks fine, as per the top source. Sports Tak has also learnt that selectors are likely to meet at the end of this month (April) or May 1 to announce India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.
Pant almost confirmed for India's T20 World Cup squad
The Indian squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup is expected to be fairly predictable. The only potential surprise might be the return of Rishabh Pant. While some might find it unexpected for a player with his experience (33 Tests, 30 ODIs, and 66 T20Is) to be considered a surprise inclusion, his long absence due to a serious accident does raise some questions. However, Pant's recent performances in the IPL have been impressive. This strong showing seems to have convinced the Indian selectors and team management that he's ready to return to international cricket. As long as his IPL performance doesn't take a drastic downturn, Pant could be on his way to the T20 World Cup which will be held jointly by the USA and West Indies.
Pant's steady show in IPL 2024
Recovered from his knee surgery, Pant has proved his fitness for both batting and wicket-keeping duties. This has garnered support from former Australian captain Michael Clarke, who expressed his desire to see Pant back in the Indian jersey. Despite a recent blip against Mumbai Indians, the 26-year-old Pant has amassed 153 runs in five IPL matches. However, he faces stiff competition for the role of India's second wicket-keeper batsman from players like Sanju Samson, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Jitesh Sharma.
Virat Kohli's suspense
Meanwhile, the talks are galore about Virat Kohli's presence in India's squad for the T20 World Cup. Leading the IPL run scorers with a century and over 300 runs, his recent form silences any doubts about his inclusion, even with some discussions about his strike rate.
The opening positions seem settled with Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, followed by Kohli at number 3. This leaves the selectors with a tough call as to how to accommodate the in-form Shubman Gill. A similar situation arises with Yuzvendra Chahal, the current IPL leader in wickets for Indian bowlers. However, Chahal faces competition from the soon-to-return Kuldeep Yadav and the all-rounder Axar Patel, who offers batting depth.
Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh are all likely inclusions.
Mayank Yadav: A Talent to Monitor
Lucknow Super Giants' speed machine Mayank Yadav has grabbed attention with his searing pace, clocking in at 156.7 kmph. However, the selectors are cautious. While his talent is undeniable, questions remain about his fitness, experience, and consistency. The team management is keeping a close eye on him, and a pre-World Cup series could be his chance to shine.
