Rishabh Pant smashes first Test century after 813 days, marks red-ball return with historic milestone

Star wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant marked his return to Test cricket with an amazing century in the first Test against Bangladesh which is being played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, on September 21 (Saturday). Pant made his return to International cricket with T20 World Cup 2024, he was out of action after suffering a horrific accident but made a miraculous return. He alongside Shubman Gill helped India not only recover from the early fall of wickets but also ensured that the hosts set a massive target in front of the visitors.

This is also the 6th Test century from Pant in Test cricket and with this, he now has the joint-most centuries as an Indian wicket-keeper. Apart from him, only the legendary MS Dhoni has 6 Test tons in front of his name.

Pant and Gill dominate Bangladesh

India lost three early wickets on Day 2. However, Pant stepped up again and he got the support from Shubman Gill. Both of them smashed their centuries and threw the opponent team on the back foot. Their 167-run partnership not only put India in a strong position but also put a mammoth of a target in front of Bangladesh, which might not be possible for them to chase down in the final innings in front of a bowling line-up that bowled them out for just 149 runs in the first innings.

India give Bangladesh 515 runs target

India posted 376 in the first innings with the help of Ashwin's ton and later bowled Bangladesh out on 149 runs to gain a huge lead of 227 runs. Then Pant and Gill's century powered India to raise their lead to 514 runs before Rohit Sharma decided to call off the innings when India's score was 287/4. Bangladesh now have a 515 run target in front of them.
