Former CSK star discloses MS Dhoni's secret impact on Rohit Sharma's captaincy, says 'it's only something that he does'
Robin Uthappa revealed MS Dhoni's influence on Rohit Sharma's captaincy. Both Rohit and Dhoni are preparing for the 17th season of the Indian Premier League.
Former Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) star batter Robin Uthappa was full of praise for Rohit Sharma, noting MS Dhoni's impact on the current India skipper's captaincy skills. Rohit Sharma has emerged as one of India's premier batters and a cornerstone of the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the past decade. His contributions have been instrumental to the Indian national team, where he has only translated his IPL success as captain. Rohit took India into the finals of ODI World Cup final and World Test Championship last year. He has also won five IPL titles for Mumbai Indians. Of late Rohit led India to 4-1 Test series victory against England

Rohit Sharma's successful IPL stint as captain
In the IPL, Rohit's impact has been monumental. Initially starting with the Deccan Chargers, he later became a key player for Mumbai Indians, eventually assuming the role of captain in 2013. Under his leadership, the team transformed, securing five IPL championships and becoming the tournament's most successful team, partly due to his role as the leading run-scorer for the team. His leadership also led the team to a Champions League victory. The 2024 IPL season will showcase Rohit Sharma in a new light, focusing solely on his batting for the Mumbai Indians, following the decision to pass the captaincy to Hardik Pandya. With the tournament kicking off on March 22, all eyes will be on the veteran batsman to see how he performs in his refined role.
Rohit picked up a lot of nuances from Dhoni: Robin Uthappa
“We must also remember that he had been a part of the Deccan Chargers that had won the IPL in 2009. He had a feeling of what it takes to win. He was an integral part of that side as well. One thing about Rohit is that he’s a very self-assured person. Nonchalance is a way of life for him. As a leader, he picked up a lot of nuances from MS (Dhoni). But he’s added his own touch to it and made it his own. He’s not scared to show his emotions on the field. It’s very unique to Rohit. It’s only something that he does,” Uthappa said, as quoted by Cricketaddictor.
Zaheer too lauds Rohit's captaincy
Zaheer Khan, who also participated in the discussion, remarked that Rohit exhibits intensity in his approach, yet appears quite relaxed. He mentioned that the Indian captain possesses a strong tactical grasp of cricket. He elaborated:
“Rohit is very intense, yet very casual. Being casual makes him approachable. But he’s very intense when he’s going about his business and preparing. That’s something that works in his favour brilliantly. He has a very good tactical understanding of the game,” Uthappa concluded.
Notably, Hardik Pandya-led MI will play their first IPL 2024's match against Shubman Gill's GT on March 24.
