Former Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma was once again troubled by a left-arm pacer with the new ball. Rajasthan Royals (RR) new ball bowler Trent Boult got the ball to swing away from him and the outside edge went into Sanju Samson’s gloves. Rohit departed for a golden duck and equalled Dinesh Karthik’s record for most ducks in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history.

Rohit and Karthik have 17 ducks each in IPL. The next on the list are Piyush Chawla, Mandeep Singh, Sunil Narine, and Glenn Maxwell with 15 ducks each.

In the T20 format (T20Is, domestic and franchise cricket), Rohit has 30 ducks now. He joined West Indies' Chris Gayle in the sixth spot. The self-proclaimed 'Universe Boss' has 30 ducks. The top spot belongs to Narine and Alex Hales with 43 ducks each. Rashid Khan has 41 ducks followed by Paul Stirling (32) and Jason Roy (31).

Boult strikes MI top order

Rohit was not the only victim of Boult in the first over. He trapped Naman Dhir in front of the stumps and sent him packing for a golden duck as well. In his next over, he got impact player Dewald Brevis caught at short third man by Nandre Burger. This is the sixth time three out of the top batters have scored a duck in an IPL innings.

Burger joined the party as well by getting Ishan Kishan caught behind. Skipper Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma helped MI use the fielding restrictions. MI were 46/4 after powerplay overs.

Rohit’s form in IPL 2024

Rohit got good starts in the first two games of MI in IPL 2024 but failed to convert them into big scores. Against Gujarat Titans (GT), he scored 43 in the run chase but MI suffered a batting collapse and lost the game by just six runs. In the record-breaking encounter against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), he contributed with a 12-ball 26 cameo in the massive run chase.
