Rajasthan Royals' captain Sanju Samson has been punished and fined for breaching IPL's code of conduct following Rajasthan Royals' 20-run loss against Delhi Capitals on May 7. Samson was docked 30 per cent of his match fee for having an argument with umpires after his controversial dismissal during IPL 2024 clash against DC.

"Samson committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL's Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee's decision is final and binding," the BCCI's statement read.

Samson's dismissal sparked a controversy when he was caught at the boundary by Shai Hope, who was positioned very close to the ropes. The third umpire's decision favored DC, leading to Samson's displeasure and subsequent altercation with the match officials. Replays confirmed that the fielder was indeed near the boundary, causing a split in opinion among fans and experts.

Sanju's effort goes in vain

Sanju Samson's dismissal after scoring 86 off 46 while chasing a colossal target of 222 runs proved to be a turning point in the high-stakes clash between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Delhi Capitals (DC). RR needed a big win to reach the playoffs. They started well, but their chase of a challenging target (222) stalled after captain Sanju Samson's dismissal in the 16th over (86 runs off 46 balls). They finished at 201 for 8 wickets.

Spinners Kuldeep Yadav (2 wickets for 25 runs in 4 overs) and Axar Patel (1 wicket for 25 runs in 3 overs) played a crucial role. Their tight bowling (good line and length) restricted the Royals' scoring rate in the middle overs. Together, they conceded only 50 runs in their combined seven overs.

While Delhi Capitals won the match and climbed to fifth place with 12 points (tied with three other teams), their playoff chances remain slim. Even with wins in their remaining two matches, they might not reach the 18 points needed for qualification. This is because the teams above them in the standings have a better chance of reaching that mark. The maximum Delhi can achieve is 16 points.
