Under-fire Shreyas Iyer finally delivers after recording back-to-back ducks in Duleep Trophy 2024, responds in style with quickfire fifty

Shreyas Iyer continued his impressive form in the Duleep Trophy 2024, scoring a quickfire fifty for India D against India B in the second innings. Shreyas Iyer's counter-attacking innings included seven fours and a six, helping India D recover from a shaky start. Iyer walked in to bat with India D struggling at 18/3 in the first four overs. However, he formed a valuable 75-run partnership with Ricky Bhui, who also contributed a valuable 55 runs. This partnership played a crucial role in stabilising India D's innings and setting a solid foundation for the team.

 

Shreyas Iyer roars with a comeback fifty

 

Shreyas Iyer's fifty in the second innings was a much-needed boost for India D after a disappointing duck in the first innings. In the first innings, Devdutt Padikkal and Srikar Bharat had laid a solid foundation with a 105-run opening partnership. Ricky Bhui also contributed a valuable fifty, but Iyer failed to capitalize on the team's strong position, being dismissed for a duck.

However, Sanju Samson's brilliant century, including 12 boundaries and three fifties, helped India D post a competitive total. Samson's innings showcased his exceptional batting skills and provided a much-needed impetus to the team.

The star India batter continued his impressive form in the Duleep Trophy 2024, scoring his second fifty of the tournament. India D, led by strong performances from Abhimanyu Easwaran and Washington Sundar, posted a total of 349 runs in the first innings. However, India B fell short by 67 runs, trailing India D. In the second innings, Iyer played a crucial role in India D's comeback, helping the team recover from early setbacks. Despite scoring a quickfire fifty off 37 balls, Iyer was dismissed for 50 by Mukesh Kumar. Sanju Samson's 45-run knock further extended India D's lead, solidifying their position in the match.

Iyer's performance in the Duleep Trophy has seen its fare share of hiccups. He scored 9 and 54 in the first round but failed to make a significant impact in the second round against India A, scoring 0 and 41. Overall, Iyer's six innings yielded 154 runs at an average of 25.66, raising concerns about his form and decision-making. Iyer's struggles, including questionable shot selection, drew criticism from fans and experts alike. As a result of his inconsistent performances, Iyer was dropped from India's Test squad. To make a comeback at the international level, Iyer will need to focus on improving his form and consistency in domestic cricket.
