'Would love to coach': Sourav Ganguly throws his name in as BCCI edges closer to sealing Gautam Gambhir deal as India's head coach

Former Board of Control for Cricket in India president Sourav Ganguly has thrown his name in for the position of India's head coach. Currently,  Gautam Gambhir is being considered as the front-runner to replace Rahul Dravid for this job in the India cricket team. There are reports stating that the KKR mentor is the BCCI's current favourite in this race.

Sourav Ganguly on becoming Indian coach

Sourav Ganguly revealed that he would love to take up the role of Indian head coach. However, he also acknowledged that Gambhir would be a great candidate for the position. 

"I would love to coach the Indian team," Ganguly told ANI on becoming the Indian coach

 

"If he wants to do it, I think he will be a very good candidate," Ganguly on Gambhir potentially taking up this role

Recently, Gambhir also opened up on the matter and said he would be interested to take up the role. He recently led Kolkata Knight Riders to a title victory as their mentor. This was KKR's first title win after a decade.

 

"I have not answered this question, although lot of people have asked me. But I have to answer you now. I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honor than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 Crore Indians and those across the globe as well," Gambhir said at an event in Dubai.

 

Rahul Dravid turns down extending his tenure

 

Rahul Dravid has officially confirmed that the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 will be his last assignment. He said that he is not planning to apply for the position again. 

 

"It is going to be the last one that I am in charge of. Yeah, just considering, unfortunately, the kind of schedules and where I find myself at this stage in my life, I don't think I'll be able to re-apply. So yeah, obviously it'll be my last one. But having said that, it's (the significance of the tournament is) no different for me. I love doing the job. I've really enjoyed coaching India and I think it's a truly special job to do, and I enjoyed working with this team and it's a great bunch of boys to work with," said Dravid ahead of India's opening game against Ireland.
